Ip Man vs 10 Black Belts: 1937, Japan invaded China after the Marco-Polo Bridge Incident. Fo-Shan, the province Ip Man lived in, was taken over by Japan. Ip Man lost his home, so him and his family moved away. Having no money, Ip Man went to work in labor, digging up dirt/coal. Until the Japanese came and offered the people working there a chance to win some rice. During that time, the people were starving. Ip Man's friend accepted the offer. To win the rice, people have to fight black belts. Each time they defeated them, they are given rice. Ip Man's friend didn't win. He died. Ip Man, not knowing of his death, wanted to search for him so he accepted the offer to fight. When he learned of his friend's death, he was enraged. So he asked to fight 10 black belts. Ip Man vs General Miura: General Miura was a Japanese general. He was the one who arranged the fight between the Chinese and black belts. He was intrigued by Chinese martial arts. After seeing Ip Man's victory against 10 black belts, he wanted Ip Man to train Japanese soldiers Wing Chun. General Miura asked Ip Man to come again, but Ip Man didn't. So General Miura searched Fo-Shan for Ip Man. He threatened to kill factory workers after Ip Man's presence was reported there. Ip Man suddenly came and meet with General Miura. That is where General Miura asked Ip Man to train Japanese soldiers. He refused. But rather, Ip Man challenged General Miura. Colonel Sato, second-in-command to General Miura, advised Miura not to fight as he fear the worst. General Miura explained if he refused to fight, than it would bring embarrassment and an admittance of defeat to Japan. Ip Man vs Twister: Twister is a British champion in boxing. During that time, the British controlled Hong Kong. Ip Man wanted to open a school there but was confronted by another martial artist, Master Hung for not following the established rules about martial art schools. So he invited Ip Man to his meeting point with other masters. There, Ip Man has to fight the other masters and Master Hung. He won and was acknowledged as a master. Ip Man, after learning of the monthly $100 fees, refused to pay. The $100 monthly fee is a necessary fee to pay the British. Skip forward, during a tournament, there was a show of Chinese martial arts to the world. Twister, a racist and brutal man, suddenly barged in and attacked all the martial artists/students. The masters, seeing the unfolding chaos, went into the ring to stop the students from attacking Twister. Twister then insulted the Chinese culture. Enraged, Master Hung challenged Twister to a fight. Twister won, killing Master Hung by accident. Enraged by the death of Master Hung, Ip Man challenged Twister to a fight. Ip Man vs Frank (Mike Tyson): In the town Ip Man was living, there was a school. This school is where his child goes to. One day, a ruthless gang saw the school as an opportunity, so they boarded it all up in the morning. Not done with the school, the next day the gang attacked once more. This time the leader went straight to the principal and was trying to force the principal to sell the school. (The gang was working with a foreign property developer, Frank, aka Mike Tyson who wanted to buy the school). Ip Man intervened and the gang left. Soon in the middle of the night, the gang came with a bunch of guys. Not just 10, but almost 50 or 100. There was a lot. Ip Man and his students were able to defend the school. Skip forward, Ip Man confronted Frank (Mike Tyson) in his property, a night fighting club. Frank made a deal with Ip Man. If Ip Man were able to survive for three minutes, Frank would leave the school alone. Ip Man vs Master Z: Master Z was a poor man, a rickshaw driver. He was also a skilled Wing Chun martial artist who always fight in fight clubs for money. He dreamed of opening a martial art school but has no money. He also have a son. He helped Ip Man defend the school when he was passing by. He rescued the principal who was being kidnapped. To get more money, he joined the gang that attacked the school. The gang attacked again but this time kidnaps all of the children, including Master Z's son. After knowing of Master Z's son, the gang leader allowed him to get his son. His son was upset the rest of his classmates were still kidnapped. So Master Z came back to help Ip Man take down the gang. He was arrested because he was a member of the gang. When he was released, he asked a newspaper writer/journalist to publish about him while he fight and challenge all the other masters. He was very skilled so he defeated them with ease. He publicly challenged Ip Man to show everyone that he is the better Wing Chun master. But Ip Man didn't show up because he was spending his time with his wife, who at the time was suffering from cancer and is close to death. Eventually, Ip Man came to Master Z for the duel he owed to Master Z.

I have seen the Ip man saga twice, I can say that it is one of the best fighting movie sagas that exists, all 4 films offer an incredible spectacle, the master Ip man (Donnie Yen) has a fascinating fighting style and very effective, without a doubt the most dangerous rivals that Ip man faced were the characters played by Darren Shahlavi, Mike Tyson and Scott Adkins, it was great to see these last 2 legends in this saga along with another legend like Donnie Yen.

Ip man 1 is the best martial arts film ever made.

I thought I was tired of martial arts movies until rewatching these scenes. I now realise that modern martial arts movies don't have this kind of artistry and genius. I guess I'll just have to stick to my DVD collection.
